A WhatsApp chatbot has no single price because it isn't a product: it's three costs stacked together. What Meta charges you per message, what the platform that connects your number charges, and what it costs to build the assistant. And there's a date worth keeping in mind: starting October 1, 2026, Meta begins charging for messages that used to be free.
The three costs that add up
| Item | Who charges it | Typical range in Mexico |
|---|---|---|
| Messages | Meta, per delivered template | $0.008 to $0.0436 USD per message |
| Platform | The provider that connects the number | $500 to $3,000 MXN a month |
| Assistant | Whoever builds and trains it | $8,000 to $60,000 MXN one time |
Almost every quote you receive mentions only the third row. The first two are recurring and depend on your volume, so always ask for them to be broken out before you sign.
How Meta charges today
Since 2025, billing stopped being per 24-hour conversation and became per delivered template. Each template falls into a category and each category has its own rate. In Mexico, prices move within these ranges:
- Marketing (promotions, catalogs, cart recovery): around $0.0436 USD per message. It's the most expensive category and the one that gets abused the most.
- Utility (order confirmation, appointment reminder, shipping notice): about $0.008 USD. Five times cheaper than marketing.
- Authentication (verification codes): around $0.03 USD.
- Service (replies within the 24-hour window): free today, changing starting in October 2026.
The difference between marketing and utility matters more than it seems. A thousand utility messages cost about 8 dollars; the same thousand as marketing run about 44. Classifying your templates correctly isn't a technical detail: it's half your bill.
What changes on October 1, 2026
Until now, if a customer wrote to you and you replied within the next 24 hours, those outgoing messages cost nothing. Starting October 1, 2026, service messages sent through the API within that window are charged too. For a business with a chatbot that answers step by step, that can mean ten billed messages where there used to be zero.
The practical takeaway: a flow with fewer steps and more complete replies now costs less than a conversational one with lots of short questions. If your assistant is already built, it's worth reviewing the flow before October, not after you see the bill.
Free app, platform or AI assistant
- WhatsApp Business app: free, one main device, manual quick replies. Enough if you do the replying yourself.
- Platform with the official API: a monthly fee plus Meta usage. It allows multiple agents, automations and reports. This is where most small businesses land.
- AI assistant connected to your information: built once, it answers with your prices, your catalog and your policies instead of repeating a menu of options.
The jump from a menu to an AI assistant is the one that changes the customer experience the most, but it only works if the underlying information is organized. An assistant trained on old prices answers fast and answers wrong.
When it pays for itself and when it doesn't
- Count how many repeated messages you get per day. If it's fewer than 20, the free app is enough.
- Calculate how many hours your team spends answering the same thing. That's the real savings, in pesos.
- Check whether you lose sales outside business hours. An assistant that collects details at 11 at night pays for itself with two customers a month.
- Estimate your monthly template volume and multiply it by the rate for its category. That number is your cost floor.
- Add the platform and development, and compare it against the cost of a person handling the same volume.
Red flags when getting quotes
- Quotes with "unlimited messages." Meta charges per message: somebody is going to pay that bill.
- Numbers managed by the provider and not by you. If you leave, you leave without your number or your history.
- Promises to automate 100% of customer service. There are always cases that must reach a person.
- No breakdown between Meta's cost, the platform and development.
