In Mexico, 100.2 million people use the internet, 83.1% of the population aged 6 and over, according to the 2024 ENDUTIH from INEGI (Mexico's national statistics institute). That figure is national and doesn't tell you how many are looking for you; to find out, check Google Business Profile or Search Console to see which searches bring you visits. There are four ways to create a website for your business: a site builder, a WordPress template, a freelancer or an agency. Below, what each one costs and what the site should include.
The four ways to build it
| Option | Approximate upfront cost | Time | Makes sense if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site builder (drag and drop) | $0 to $5,000 MXN per year | Hours to 1 week | You're validating the idea and have the time |
| WordPress template | $2,000 to $8,000 MXN | 1 to 2 weeks | You want something more flexible and know your way around technology |
| Freelancer | $3,000 to $15,000 MXN | 1 to 3 weeks | You need a simple site with direct contact |
| Agency | $8,000 to $40,000 MXN | 2 to 6 weeks | The site has to bring in customers, not just exist |
Site builder, freelancer and agency use the same market reference ranges as the pricing guide; the WordPress template range is an Elevalia estimate, with no documented quotes behind it. All of them change with the number of pages, the design and what maintenance includes. For the pricing detail, see how much a professional website costs in Mexico.
What a business website should include
- What you do and who it's for, on the first screen.
- Services with a price or range. Shoppers want to know whether they can afford you before they message you.
- A WhatsApp button that's visible on mobile. Check in your analytics which devices your visitors use.
- Map, address and hours, if you serve customers at a physical location.
- Real photos of your work, not stock images.
- Reviews or case studies from customers who agree to appear.
- A privacy notice, if you have a form or collect personal data.
Domain and hosting: what must be in your name
The domain (your address, like yourbusiness.com.mx) costs approximately $200 to $500 MXN per year, depending on the registrar; hosting starts at $1,000 MXN per year on shared plans, depending on the provider. Insist that both be registered in your name and that you get the login details. If the provider disappears and the domain was theirs, you lose your address.
The steps, in order
- Define what you want visitors to do: message you, book or buy.
- Gather your text, photos, services and prices before you open any tool.
- Pick one of the four options based on budget and time.
- Register the domain in your name.
- Check the site on your phone before you publish it.
- Add it to Google Business Profile and put the link on your social profiles.
When to hire it out instead of doing it yourself
Do it yourself if you're just validating your idea or if your business runs on referrals and you only need an online business card. Hire it out if you want to show up on Google when people search for your service and city, because that depends on choosing keywords by city, organizing headings and compressing images, tasks that fall to you on a site builder. If you're torn between an independent provider and a company, read web design agency or freelancer.
