To make a digital invitation for free, the most complete app today is Canva: it has wedding, quinceañera (15th birthday) and baptism templates, and according to its Help Center a free account can publish up to five sites on a my.canva.site domain at no cost. What no free app handles well is an organized RSVP, and that is where it gets decided whether an app is enough for you or a paid platform or a custom invitation is a better fit.
The four types of tools and what each delivers
When you search for apps to make digital invitations, the results mix very different things. It helps to sort them by what they hand you in the end, not by their name:
| Type | What it delivers | RSVP | Reference cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design editor (Canva and similar) | Image, PDF or simple page | Not included; paired with a separate form | $0 on the free plan |
| Mobile template apps | Image or short video | Almost never | $0 with watermark; premium by subscription |
| Web invitation platforms | Own link per event | Yes, on paid plans | Varies by platform; charged per event |
| Custom invitation | Own page with your design | Yes, with a downloadable list | From $3,990 MXN with Elevalia |
The custom invitation range is explained in more detail in how much a digital invitation costs.
Design editors: free and flexible, but no guest list
Canva is the starting point for almost everyone. You pick a template, change the names, date and colors, and download it as an image or PDF to send by WhatsApp. You can also turn it into a one-section web page and publish it for free with a link ending in my.canva.site. If you want your own domain, you buy that separately.
- Pros: thousands of templates, no watermark on the free elements and full control of the design
- Cons: some illustrations and fonts are paid, and RSVP does not exist as a built-in feature
- The usual workaround: add a button that opens a Google Form to confirm. It works, but the replies land in a spreadsheet that you have to clean up
Mobile template apps: fast, with fine print
Adobe Express and CapCut are two of the most used for this kind of invitation template. They get you through an afternoon in a pinch; check each one's own page for what the free version includes before designing, because it changes over time. The common problem is what you do not see in the preview:
- A watermark or footer with the app's name, which only goes away if you pay for the premium version
- Weekly or monthly subscriptions that renew on their own if you forget to cancel
- Low-resolution export on the free version, which looks blurry when you zoom in on the phone
- Overused templates: your guests have probably already received one nearly identical
Before you spend an hour on the design, export a test with any text and check the quality and whether the app's watermark appears.
Web invitation sites and platforms: one link per event
Here you no longer send an image but a link. The invitation lives on a page with your name, countdown, map, dress code, gift registry and, most importantly, an RSVP form that saves the replies to a list. They charge per event, and basic plans tend to limit features.
What to check before paying for one:
- How long the page stays published and whether it is deleted after the event
- Whether the RSVP list can be downloaded to Excel or only viewed inside the platform
- Whether you can limit how many companions each guest confirms
- Whether the link shows a photo preview when you paste it into WhatsApp
- Whether the plan you pay for removes the platform's logo
If you plan to send it by WhatsApp, also look at how digital RSVP works, because it is the feature that saves you the most work in the last week before the event.
If you would rather do it yourself, this is the order
With any tool, the order that creates the least rework is the same: first the complete information (date, times, exact address, RSVP deadline), then the design, and last a test on three different phones. The step-by-step with examples is in how to make a digital invitation.
When it makes sense to hire it out
A free app is enough for a family lunch or a party of 30 people. Hiring it out starts to make sense when at least one of these is true:
- The event goes past 80 or 100 guests and you need a reliable number for the caterer
- You want to control companions per guest without chasing anyone on WhatsApp
- The design has to look like yours and not like the template that already made the rounds at another wedding
- You do not have time to learn a new tool two months before the event
At Elevalia
We make custom digital invitations with your own page, RSVP with a downloadable list, a map and a countdown, from $3,990 MXN with one round of revisions included. If you are still comparing options, start with the table above and choose based on your number of guests, not on the prettiest template.
